Third Prize: Boys and Barbeques by Deirdre Harrison

Another quintessential kiwi scene is the subject of our third prize winner. “Boys and Barbeques” was taken by Deirdre Harrison, a Science postgraduate.

“It’s the unusual angle that makes this photo” said Iain. “It’s a typical kiwi summer scene, with men of all ages congregated at the barbeque, yet there’s also an edge to it that I can’t quite put my finger on – a certain precariousness to the boy poised on the chair, and the expression of the man in the top right. These elements of tension and the unusual viewpoint add to the picture and draw in our interest.”
