The inaugural alumni photography competition has been won by Phillip Light, a psychology graduate now working for the Health Research Council.

The winning photograph is a personal portrait of Phillip with his daughter James – a captured moment that Philip feels is very expressive of their relationship.

“There’s a mischievous quality to the photo which I like” Phillip said. “I just ambushed James. I think I tickled her, then quickly took the picture. I like how the focus is on James, not me. She’s the centre of attention”.

Phillip took the picture earlier this year, with a camera he had borrowed.

“I’ve been taking photos for ten years or so with my first camera, which is a budget film SLR model” said Phillip. “I borrowed my father in law’s digital camera earlier this year and I’ve ended up taking more pictures with it than he has I think.”

Winning the Nikon D5000 has inspired Phillip to take his photography more seriously. He explains “I don’t want to give the impression that I think that now I’ve won this competition, I’m suddenly a great photographer. I just think owning such a good digital camera will allow me to experiment and be more creative. Developing a roll of film each week can be so expensive. Now I’ll be able to take as many pictures as I like – me and the camera will be joined at the hip”.

Phillip also plans to make use of the camera’s HD video capabilities, especially filming his two young daughters as they’re growing up. “Video of your kids doing even the most mundane things – in ten year’s time those clips will be gold. You’ll have forgotten the smaller things they did at age six and seven and the video will be a great reminder”.
