2009 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients

Richard Chandler BCom, MCom

Richard Chandler is one of New Zealand’s most successful businessmen. As founder and chairman of Singapore-based investment group Orient Global, Richard’s business strategy has been shaped by a vocation to see capital managed effectively, to accelerate prosperity in financial and social businesses as well as countries. Richard is rated one of Asia’s top 50 philanthropists by Forbes magazine, having recently established a US$ 100 million fund dedicated to improving the quality and availability of education for low-income communities in the developing world.

Lynley Dodd, DCNZM, DipFA

Lynley Dodd is one of New Zealand’s best known authors. Her career in children’s literature spans over 30 years and as many books, with her popular animal adventures winning multiple awards, including New Zealand picture book of the year. Widely published, Lynley’s books have sold over six million copies worldwide. In 2002 Lynley was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to children’s literature.

The Rt. Hon. Sir Douglas Graham KNZM, Hon D Waikato, LLB, JP

Sir Douglas Graham is a former politician whose distinguished parliamentary career saw him oversee some of the most significant legislation in New Zealand’s history. He was the Minister of Justice for seven years and Minister in Charge of Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations for nine years, during which he initiated and developed ground breaking policies aimed at settling claims lodged with the Waitangi Tribunal. Sir Douglas was appointed to Her Majesty’s Privy Council in 1998 and knighted in 1999.

The Rt. Hon. Tuilaepa Malielegaoi BCom, MCom

The Rt. Hon. Tuilaepa Malielegaoi has had a long and distinguished career in Samoan politics, and is currently serving his third term as Prime Minister. Tuilaepa was the first Samoan to gain a Masters degree in Commerce, and is renowned for his tight fiscal management of the Samoan economy.

Professor Ngaire Woods BA(Econ), LLB(Hons), M.Phil(IR), D.Phil

Professor Ngaire Woods is one of the world’s leading experts on global economic governance. A professor of international political economy at Oxford University, Ngaire is an advisor to the British Prime Minister, the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations. She is a popular media commentator and director of Oxford University’s Global Economic Governance Programme. *Please note that she is unable to attend the Distinguished Alumni Awards Dinner and will be presented her award at an alumni reception in London on 16 March 2009.

Young Alumnus of the Year
Toa Fraser, BA (English)

Toa Fraser is an award-winning playwright, screenwriter, director and film-maker who, in the ten short years since his graduation, has excelled as a writer and director on stage and screen. Toa’s second feature film, Dean Spanley, recently premiered to rave reviews at the Toronto, London, New Zealand and Australian Film Festivals, and follows on from his internationally acclaimed film, No. 2.
