Sonny Singh - BE
Sonny graduated with a BE in electrical and electronic engineering in 1986.
He initially worked as an electrical engineer in Fiji, but decided to move to New Zealand when a position became vacant with NZ Steel. It was a career-changing move.
Although he has remained employed in the same industry, Sonny has also had the opportunity to try new things. In 1998 he moved to the United States to become a plant maintenance engineer take a job with BHP CSC, now called Steelscape. He later managed Steelscape's facilities in California as the Maintenance & Engineering Manager.
Sonny's role is now more managerial. He credits strong technical expertise, a willingness to get hands-on experience, and building the expertise of those around you as being important to succeed in engineering management.
Sonny lived in a hostel when he was a student, and had a scholarship. He has fond memories of the University: "not having to worry about money, lots of spare time and a social life"!
When he isn't working, Sonny enjoys working on home improvement projects, and travelling with his family.
