Michael is widely regarded world-wide as the most outstanding rugby player of his generation.

In his 11 years as an All Black, Michael proved an exemplary role model and shown outstanding determination in returning from daunting injury.

Michael received a New Zealand Medal in 1990 for service to the Pacific Island community.

Michael received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997.
