Elsie Locke - BA

The late Elsie Locke obtained a BA from Auckland University College in 1933.

Elsie continuously campaigned and written in support of women's rights, peace, justice, the environment and a more balanced understanding of New Zealand history. For over 60 years Elsie acted as a critic and conscience of New Zealand society, even though many of her ideas at times proved very unpopular.

Elsie published many books and received many awards, including the Katherine Mansfield award for non-fiction in 1958. Her works are included amongst those of distinguished New Zealand writers at the Alexander Turnbull Library. Her excellence as a scholar was recognised by Canterbury University in 1987 through the award of an honorary LittD.

Elsie received a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1996.
